about

A couple of Primal Tap experiments preceded by its source material. Seemed a good way to group some stray songs together — and it holds.

The Primal Tap is a piece of software that emulates the Lexicon Prime Time Delay — an early digital delay / sampler popularized by Daniel Lanois. Though it’s meant to be an effect, it’s a lot more fun as an instrument.

"Spiegel" is a tribute to the great Laurie Spiegel. I have no idea how I made it... Though I'm pretty sure the Animoog was involved.

The final track is kind of the outlier, yet connected to the first: "Drums in the Deep" was an early GarageBand experiment. Always liked it but it never had a place to go. Last year I expanded it for a dance commission. The choreographer / director wanted to sound really hopeless at the end. I tried a couple of different things, but accidentally came up with something in the opposite direction that I loved — something desperate yet optimistic… And dance-y!

Needless to say, it wasn’t what the choreographer wanted (though I did deliver on the gloom), so I figured it would have some further use. I thought about expanding it — and maybe I will — but, revisiting it today, it has a cool movement that I like as is.
